Minimalism update | How to start yourself?
March 13, 2017
Minimalism is a perfect way to declutter from busy routines. In my last blog post, I wrote about the big benefits that I notice since I’ve started. I can really recommend to anyone that want to live a more meaningful and conscious life.
How do you start with minimalism?
Well, I think the most important thing is that you do this because you really want to. You’ve noticed that all the stuff around you only distract you from doing activities you want to do, meaby you’ve experienced that you’re a real emotional shopper and want to downgrade that habbit since your house is filled with stuff. Whatever your reasons is, do it because you really want to. That’s so important. Especially if your decluttering your ’emotional baggage’ a.k.a. things that you are keeping even though it’s reminds you of a depressing time in your life.
Marie Kondo gives a beautiful description. If it doens’t spark joy, than it’s time to go. Well, I really think she has a good point with that. I mean; why would you keep it if you don’t like it/ use it or need it?
But today I want to give you another tip! Cause, what about our books? Am I the only one that has tons of books in her basement? Thank lord, I already gave away a lot of books during the years but my collegae books (Social Work) are still in there. I haven’t opend the boxes for years… Oeps. It’s time to sort things out and clean up that basement! Me and my sweet neighbour girls are in for a crazy gardening project and I think we need some space where we can keep our belongings.
What do you do with your old books?
1. Sell them.
Need some extra cash? At the Bol.com website (Dutch) there’s a spot where you can purchase but also sell your books. It’s super easy. I’ve done it years ago but I forgot the option, haha. You don’t wake up rich doing this but hey, every euro is something, right?
2. Give them away to charity
At this moment there are a lot of refugees out there in Europe. If you have books that can help them to learn your language, why not helping them by donating them? I think that’s a good way of helping society.
3. Surprise your friends
Do you also love to surprise your friends? Ask them if they want to have a book. I’m pretty sure you can make someone smile!
4. Recycle your old books
I’ve seen so many creative girls out there that recycled old magazines and books. For example: they wrapped gifts in old magazines. Or redecorated old boxes. I’m thinking about doing this myself.
