What is a capsule wardrobe?

January 23, 2017

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article about my capsule wardrobe. But what is a capsule wardrobe? Asked one of the readers. Today I want to share more info about the concept that causes a massive shift in my mindset.

A capsule wardrobe

Is a wardrobe of a maximum of 33 items. If you want to follow the ‘original’ program. The meaning of a capsule wardrobe is that you have a wardrobe full of key items that are easy to mix up and that you can use for at least one season. Some people have a capsule wardrobe for every season. They like to have a few basics, a favorite bag, and jacket that they use for the whole season. Others, like me, tend to have a capsule wardrobe for the whole year around.

Why should you consider a capsule wardrobe?

– If you spend too much time on choosing an outfit every day

– If you want to live more minimalistic

– If you noticed that you keep on buying clothes but don’t really ‘enjoy’ it anymore

– If you want to live more down to earth and focus more on the inside than on the way you look

or may you just want to save money. Everything is possible.

For me, it really helped to stick with my minimalist mindset.

Minimalism gives me so much freedom. It really helps me to stay in the moment, to enjoy the little things and don’t get swept away of all the new trends.

I just buy shoes cause I really like them and I know that I will wear them all season instead of buying them cause I feel insecure about my outfit.

It helps me to save more money and at the same time spend a bit more on high-quality products.

The pressure of consuming is out of my mind and for me, that’s the biggest pro.

How to make your own capsule wardrobe

  1. Grab all of your clothing out of the closet and only hang up the clothing in your closet that you are wearing for that month.
  2. Check all the rest of the clothing. Why aren’t you wearing them? Are they off season or don’t you really like them anymore?
  3. Create at least 10 combinations with your favorite items and write down what type of basics you are missing.

A little note: don’t be afraid if you have more dan 33 items. It’s your closet: the most important thing is that you have a wardrobe that really suits your personality and style.

Aw gaat helemaal goed komen Rachel. Wellicht beginnen met jezelf uitdagen om 1x in de week iets te dragen wat je al een maand niet meer gedragen hebt?

I like the idea, but it’s not for me!! I love extraordinary pieces of clothing, so I tend to have too little basic items and too many other items!!

I’m not there yet – and I don’t know if I will ever pin myself down to a fixed number of clothes, but I am trying to follow the basic rules: to only buy stuff I can commit to wearing many, many times (30-wear rule, at least), to only keep the stuff I really feel good about and to only buy because I need it, not for the sake of buying itself. Buying fair and sustainable really helpes me to stay focused.

Super fijn artikel!
